Music phones may slide ipod growth

Hong Kong - Perhaps the biggest threat to Apple Computer's iPod and the portable music player industry is a device already nestling in a billion pockets: the cellphone. Sales of cellphones that can store and play back music are climbing, raising hopes among handset producers like Sony Ericsson and Motorola that it will be their next growth driver. Music phones may never kill off the market for the stand-alone music players of Apple, Sony, Samsung Electronics, Reigncom and others, but they could dent the market's potential. 'The convenience factor is big' "You have the ability to talk, take pictures and listen to music in one device. The convenience factor is big," said Simon Leung, senior vice president of Motorola Asia, at the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in Hong Kong. Simpler music devices with flash memory chips that store up to a thousand songs are the most vulnerable, analysts say. "The music phone is not going to significantly impact the high-end, high-capacity hard disk market but it will certainly have a major impact on the low-end flash market," said Peter King of Strategy Analytics. King estimates sales of phones equipped with MP3 music players will balloon to 796 million in 2010, accounting for three-quarters of all handsets sold, from 94 million this year. Over the same period, the market for stand-alone digital music players, should triple to 176 million units from 58 million, which while still strong, would be slower than the break-neck expansion of recent years.

Is Apple Evaluating iTMS Movie Download Service?

Is Apple in the process of developing an iTunes movie download service that would offer full-length feature films to iTunes customers with broadband internet connections? According to a recent AppleInsider report, it seems quite possible.AppleInsider reports that Fullerton, California-based Coyote Insight held a survey this week that asked participants questions related to a potential "iTunes movie service" which would provide movie downloads to a computer or iPod in an on-demand fashion. From the survey: "This iTunes service would provide access to 1,000 movies on demand which can be downloaded to your computer and, in turn, to your video iPod if you have one, or even your television if it is connected to your computer."The survey goes on to explain the nature of the proposed download service, and how it differs from the current iTunes model.

Apple Launches The iPod Hi-fi With Natural Bass Generated By a 130mm Woofer.

Without dissappointment, Apple has introduced the "ultimate" at today's event, held at the Cupertino, CA headquarters of Apple Computer, Inc. It's known as the iPod Hi-Fi. Apple describes it thus:
Pod Hi-Fi features three speaker cones custom designed to provide balanced sound across the frequency range. The result of numerous rigorous acoustic tests, this design delivers room-filling stereo imaging. The two 80 mm wide-range cones are set in dedicated chambers and isolated on the front plate, providing mid and high frequencies that sound vivid and bright. The natural bass of iPod Hi-Fi is generated by a 130 mm woofer. Thanks to the airtight sealing, the low frequencies are enriched inside the enclosure and then directed via tuned tubes through ports in the front.Sounds like a recipe for high fidelity audio. Apple also announced a leather case for the 5G iPod and nano that will retail for $99. The case does not allow access to the screen or controls. Apple Tuesday's New Products?

We mentioned earlier that Apple will be releasing "fun, new products" on Tuesday, February 28th. As Mac On Intel points out an Intel-based Mac mini is expected, but what of the iPod?ThinkSecret tells us, a notable iPod accessory from Apple, an iPod "boom box" of sorts, is expected to debut on Tuesday.
Word of such a product first emerged late last year on AppleInsider. The iPod Hi-Fi boombox will mark Apple's first foray into significant iPod companion products, as the company seeks to capitalize on the iPod economy it has created, valued today at several hundred million dollars. To date, Apple has released only minor accessories for the iPod with its logo, including remotes, cases, earphones, and docks.We mentioned this back in January, in the Macworld San Francisco 2006 rumor roundup. It didn't jump out to greet us then, but sources indicate things will be different this week.No further word on the rumored Video iPod, other than to say that the recent alleged photo of the unit is fake (thanks MacRumors). Apple plans a special event for February 28.

Apple plans a special invitation-only event to introduce new products next week. The event happens on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at 10:00 AM Pacific Time.
The invitation gives away precious little about what Apple has up its sleeve for the event.
“Come see some fun new products from Apple,” says the invitation received by Macworld. The e-mail features a large rendering of an iCal-style icon with the date set to February 28, 2006.
The event takes place at Apple Town Hall on Apple’s Cupertino campus.

The 30th birthday of Apple Computer, Inc. will be on April 1 this year. Steve Job and Steve Wozniak co-founded Apple on April 1, 1976, to bring to market the Apple I, a legendary piece of engineering on the part of Woz. The iPod Has Become Very Useful In Medicine.

The iPod’s sleek design and status-symbol white earbuds are Gen-X trademarks, but Grayson Wheatley is introducing the audio player to a demographic advertisers forgot: elderly patients with chronic health problems.
Wheatley, a cardiovascular surgeon at the Arizona Heart Institute in Phoenix, recently launched a podcasting series to educate patients he believes is among the first of its kind. He has produced podcasts, from two minutes to an hour long and contain video and audio content, that keep clinic visitors informed about the procedures they'll undergo and brief them on ways to lead a healthy lifestyle afterward.
In the programs, which have titles like "Angioplasty and Plaque Excision" or "Coronary Artery Bypass," AHI physicians describe each step in an operation and its importance as new age music plays in the background. "Endarterectomy," for instance, explains that clearing deposits from the carotid artery reduces stroke risk because excess plaque encourages blood clots to form and lodge in the brain.
Any internet user -- whether an AHI patient or not -- can access the presentations by subscribing to a free podcasting feed or downloading the files directly from the hospital’s website.

Apple's iDVD, iMovie, iTunes, iPhoto and iWeb Updated.

Apple has just recently updated most of the individual applications. iDVD has been updated to version 6.0.1; iPhoto has been updated to 6.0.1; iWeb has been updated to 1.0.1; iMovie HD has been updated to 6.0.1 and iTunes has been updated to 6.0.3. Most of the applications have been updated to “address a number of minor issues,” according to Apple. iDVD 6 also fixes integration problems with other iLife applications, importing of legacy projects and theme-related issues. iPhoto fixes problems with photocasting, viewing thumbnails in large libraries and ordering cards, calendars and books. iWeb fixes issues related to publishing and blogs. iTunes includes “stability and performance improvements” over its predecessor. iMovie fixes problems with Ken Burns rendering performance, Scrubber Bar editing performance and theme image quality. The updates are also individually described and available for download on Apple’s software downloads page.

Apple to release wide screen video ipod.

April 1, 2006 is Apple’s birthday and the rumor mill has been abuzz of late with expectatons of a new, widescreen video iPod. Some reports speak of an iPod with a widescreen LCD that occupies the entire face of the unit, with virtual controls implemented through the use of a touchscreen display, while others speak of a screen three times as large as the current iPods. The fifth-generation video-iPod has a 2.5″ LCD featuring a 320×240 display. If the three times as large rumor is correct, we imagine that the resultant screen resolution would be 640×360 - not far from the resolution of a widescreen DVD and this would surpass the Sony PSP’s 480×272 resolution screen.With Apple’s movement towards the entertainment center with Front Row and rumors of forthcoming large screen displays, an increase in the resolution of videos sold through the iTunes Music Store just makes sense. While a 640×360 video would scale up far better than the current 320×240 content, it’s certainly possible that Apple may be targetting an even higher resolution for truly ideal viewing on 20″ iMacs and beyond, but only time will tell.

Apple Computer Inc. is to celebrate a huge milestone in digital music sales by awarding prizes to music downloaders as the iTunes store approaches sales of 1 billion songs. This competition is similar to last July's countdown to 500 million tracks sold. In this competition, the purchaser of every 100,000th track will receive a 4GB iPod Nano and a $100 iTunes Music Card. A nice gift indeed, but nothing in comparison to what the 1 billionth downloader will get. The grand prize winner will receive a 20-inch iMac, ten 60GB iPods (5 white & 5 black), and a $10,000 iTunes Music Card. Along with the new goodies, Apple will also create a full-ride scholarship in the name of the grand-prize winner to a world-renowned music school. Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant (cancerous) cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).
Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement products.

I am so sorry that i put the cart before the horse, nevertheless, there is no sin too great that cannot be forgiven. well, let me gist you a bit about podcasting.

Podcasting is the distribution of audio or video files, such as radio programs or music videos, over the internet using RSS syndication for listening on mobile devices and personal computers. A podcast is a web feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to subscribe to, and also the content of that feed. Podcasters' websites also may offer direct download of their files, but the subscription feed of automatically delivered new content is what distinguishes a podcast from a simple download or real-time streaming (see below).
While the name was primarily associated with audio subscriptions in 2004, the RSS enclosure syndication technique had been used with video files since 2001, before portable video players were widely available. In fact, any file with a URL, including still images and text, can be delivered as an enclosure.
Use of "podcast" to describe both audio and video feeds seemed natural to some users, while others preferred to reserve the word for audio and coin new terms for video subscriptions. Other "pod-" derived neologisms include "podcasters" for individuals or organizations offering feeds, and "podcatchers" for special RSS aggregators with the ability to transfer the files to media player software or hardware.
Podcasting's essence is about creating content (audio or video) for an audience that wants to listen when they want, where they want, and how they want.

There’s enough money in podcasting for unlimited personal broadcasters, says podcast pioneer Chris Pirillo. As long as they make these audio web feeds interesting, of course.Mr. Pirillo, the founder of tech media network Lockergnome and host of a podcast sponsored by Microsoft, flew from Seattle to San Francisco last week to address an overflowing crowd of Apple fanatics about the “podcast economy” at Macworld.
However, in an interview with RedHerring.com after the talk, he said he regretted the decision to give a generic concept like “on-demand audio” a catchy name so closely associated with the Cupertino, California, computer company. “I fought it,” he said, referring to the naming process a couple of years ago. That’s because the overlap between “podcast” and Apple’s wildly popular “iPod” portable music players has led to assumptions that the broadcasts can only play on Apple devices.

Indeed, Apple competitor Creative got heat at the recent Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas for saying “podcast” stood for “personal on-demand broadcast.” It was seen as a blatant attempt to avoid mentioning the iPod. But that etymology is no recent invention—it was discussed about the time of the birth of podcasting—said Mr. Pirillo, and he should know.
However, Mr. Pirillo acknowledged the connection to Apple’s hottest product has been a boon for the young world of podcasting. “It was a fortunate and unfortunate thing,” he said.
Besides selling 14 million iPods in the last quarter alone, Apple played an instrumental role in bringing podcasts out of the realm of geeks by including ways to subscribe to new shows in its iTunes software

Apple unveils cut-price iPod nano

The iPod nano sold in vast quantities when first released in 2005
Apple has introduced a new version of its iPod nano with a smaller capacity of one gigabyte, enough for 240 songs.
The move is latest tweak to the company's evolving iPod line-up, and means the ultra-slim nano now comes in 1GB, 2GB and 4GB sizes.
The 1GB nano will sell for £109 in the UK, with the 2GB model at £139 and the 4GB version priced at £169.
Apple has also cut the price of its iPod Shuffle range, which uses flash memory rather than hard drive storage.
The 512MB iPod shuffle will now retail for £49 in the UK, with a 1GB version selling for £69.
The company said it had changed the structure and pricing at the lower end of its iPod family to make the popular music players more affordable.
Apple has sold some 42 million iPods since the first model was launched in October 2001.

Microsoft To Create iPod Competitor.

For the last four years, in the domain of digital music, Microsoft has played the role of pinata to Apple’s drunken frat boys with baseball bats. It has not been pretty. And so, after taking a rather severe beating in this emerging business of digital music, rumors have finally started to abound that Microsoft is now ready to enter the arena. Apparently they wanted to steal the title of “worst designed MP3 player of the year” award away from Sony and their “bean of music”. Or maybe they just have a few million lying around and they don’t know what to do with it. Anything could be possible.
But I think that what most likely occurred was that Gates finally realized that Apple is using the iPod + ITMS combo as a trojan horse to gain access to your living room. The future of computing will be to move your computer into your living room and merge it with your TV. The Xbox 360 is a move in this direction. However, it won’t be enough by itself. And it will ultimately be overshadowed by Apple’s entry into this area. So, this could be why MS wants to create a competitor to the iPod.

Is Apple Readying A Red iPod?

Is Apple about to bring a Red iPod to market?
A post made last week at Popbitch told that U2 lead Bono was recently overheard discussing a new charity red American Express card as well as a red iPod in Dublin's Patrick Guilbaud restaurant. This bit of gossip became a lot more interesting when, just days later, Bono unveiled an red American Express card as part of Project Red, a new collection of merchandise from various companies created to help in the global fight against HIV. Approximately 40 percent of profits from the sale of Project Red products will go to the Global Fund to Fight Aids.

Aside from American Express, some of the Project Red partners are: Gap, Converse, and Giorgio Armani. Is Apple about to join the team?

Google itunes to compete with Apple........

Google may be looking to launch a digital music store that would compete with Apple’s iTunes, according to one Wall Street analyst. Robert Peck of Bear Stearns predicts that the search engine giant will roll out such a service within the next six months.
We believe that Google is in the midst of creating its own iTunes competitor, which we’ve dubbed ‘Google Tunes.’ We think this is a logical step, now that the nascent Google Video product has been introduced,we would expect Google to rollout a Beta service within 3 to 6 months. We note that Google has not confirmed our expectations, and that our thinking is based on Mosaic theory. However, we do think this fits with Google’s recent moves and its ultimate goal of organizing the world’s information.

And Fujitsu has posted high goals: grab 30% of market shares for this type of HD. The company was sued over its FairPlay DRM technology, bad iPod batteries, scratched iPod nano screens, and disgruntled employees.It fired back with lawsuits against developers that posted pre-release copies of Tiger on file-sharing Web sites, and Mac rumor Web sites that leaked information about unreleased products.

Michigan dental students can watch lectures on iPods

University of Michigan dental students who sleep through a lecture can turn to their iPods to catch up on what they missed.Apple Computers Inc. is giving students at the School of Dentistry access to the lectures free of charge in an MP3 compressed digital data file format on an iTunes Internet site. Students can download them onto their iPods and watch them wherever - and whenever - they want."The first thought is that this is fanciful, working out and walking or drinking coffee while listening to a lecture, but it is growing," said Brock Read, a researcher for the Chronicle of Higher Education. "There are about a dozen universities involved so far."

Some express doubts about the trend.

"My concern is students not taking notes will have a lasting effect on their true mastery of the material," Michigan Technological University humanities Professor William Kennedy told The Detroit News for a story Tuesday.

Internet access to lectures is nothing new. But the extreme portability that the MP3 format offers is."It's not a better way of learning or a worse way. It's just a new way. Our way," said dental student Jared Van Ittersum. "It's about maximizing our time. But, frankly, there have been a couple of lectures, early morning ones, where I just didn't get up."

"It's kind of hard while you are taking notes in a hurry to write something like parvo cellular nucleus," Lopez said. "I reviewed one lecture the other night for an exam, and I picked up on several points that I had missed in my notes."Lopez said the technology also allowed him to skip one lecture to attend a sonogram examination of his unborn child.

The ipod is the next level, the way of the future, the way of life, move with the ipod and you move into the future.
The original iPod interacted only with Macintosh computers running Mac OS 9 or Mac OS X until July 17, 2002, when Apple began selling a Windows-compatible iPod, with its internal hard drive formatted in FAT32 instead of the original HFS Plus. [5] Apple released a Windows version of iTunes on October 16, 2003 [6]; previously, Windows users needed third-party software such as Musicmatch Jukebox (included with Windows iPods before the release of the Windows version of iTunes), ephPod, or XPlay to manage the music on their iPods.
An iPod with its hard drive formatted as HFS+ operated only with a Macintosh, because Windows did not recognize HFS+, but since the Macintosh could handle FAT32, an iPod formatted as FAT32 could operate with a Macintosh as well as with a PC. All iPods ship with FAT32 by default and are reformatted for use with Macintosh computers.
The iPod uses standard USB and FireWire mass-storage connectivity, and therefore any system with mass-storage support can mount it and use it as an external hard drive. The iPod will also charge from any powered USB or Firewire port, regardless of software support. A special database file serves to list the songs available to play, however, so users require a program such as iTunes to upload songs. As of 2005 only gtkpod offers such functionality for Linux and other Unix variants. Apple has not yet released a Linux version of the software used to flash the firmware of the iPod.
